대한민국은 3월 1일을 한민족의 독립 의사를 세계만방에 알린 날로 기념하고 있습니다. 1919년 3월 1일은 한민족이 일본의 식민통치에 항거하고 독립선언서를 발표한 날입니다. 세계는 한민족이 독립과 자유를 위해 막대한 희생을 치렀다는 사실을 잘 알고 있습니다.

우크라이나는 국권을 지키기 위해 지금 러시아의 침략군과 격렬한 전투를 벌이고 있습니다. 침략국인 러시아는 우크라이나의 민간인을 학살하고 도시를 폭격하며 우크라이나의 문화유산을 파괴하는 만행을 저지르고 있습니다. 또한 우크라이나의 언어, 역사와 문화를 왜곡비하하면서 우크라이나의 국권을 빼앗으려고 합니다.

이 상황에서 우크라이나 여러 지역의 지명이 침략국인 러시아의 발음으로 한국에서 표기되고 있다는 사실은 우크라이나인들에게 커다란 상처와 아픔이 되어 왔습니다.

이번 우크라이나 사태의 계기로 우크라이나의 지명을 우크라이나식 발음으로 표기해 주실 것을 간청드립니다.

On March 1 South Korea marks the Independence Movement Day, commemorating the mass demonstrations that took place in many parts of the country in 1919 against foreign domination in Korea. The world knows how many sacrifices Korean people made to defend their statehood and freedom.

These days, Ukraine is courageously fighting for its very existence against russian occupying forces. The aggressor is aiming to destroy us as a sovereign nation, bombing our cities, killing civilians, destroying our historic sites, denying our culture and suppressing our melodic language.

That is why we appeal to the Korean public and authorities to stop using the names of Ukrainian cities in their Russian transliteration.

Please, do not offend us by calling our cities the same way that occupants do!
